Builders of the Future Program Launches Year Two, Training Kahnawake Residents in Key Trades

by Career Development Services

A groundbreaking vocational training initiative was set in motion last year with the launch of the Builders of the Future Program. It is designed to equip Kahnawake students with essential skills in three core construction trades.

This program is a collaborative effort between the New Frontiers School Board (NFSB) and the Lester B. Pearson School Board (LBPSB) and focuses on high-quality vocational education. Instruction was provided by teachers from the two school boards at the Regional Center for Adult Education (CREA) in the Kahnawake community. Their partnership aims to deliver comprehensive training in three key areas: Carpentry (NFSB) and Electricity and Plumbing (LBPSB). The program is set to run from the 2023 through to 2027, with each cohort consisting of eight students, selected through a competitive application process.

The Builders of the Future Program offers a rigorous six-month curriculum, delivering approximately 600 hours of instruction evenly split across the three trades. Participants will also benefit from a work placement with local contractors to gain practical experience in their chosen field. Throughout the training process a veteran contractor from the community is on hand to mentor them on practices of the trades within the community. This gives the students valuable support and insight to the realities of working in the trade and as a first nations tradesperson. The program is tailored to provide students with the skills necessary to either enter the workforce directly or pursue further education to achieve a full Diploma of Vocational Studies (DEP) in their preferred trade.

“Through this program, we are not only preparing students for immediate employment but also opening doors for further educational opportunities,” said Mark Newton, coordinator of Career Development Services at the LBPSB.

This initiative underscores a significant commitment to vocational training within the community, addressing the growing need for skilled tradespeople. By fostering local talent, the Builders of the Future Program aims to achieve a 100% success rate among its participants, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for their careers. “We are committed to supporting our students with a monthly allowance, coverage of childcare expenses, and all relevant study costs,” explained Mr. Newton.

The program’s focus on skill development and comprehensive support for students reflects a broader effort to enhance local employment prospects and educational attainment.
