Director General's Report to Council for September 2024
by Cindy Finn, Director General, LBPSB
As we approach these final days of summer, we see subtle signs that autumn is about to arrive. The new school year is now fully underway – just a little over two weeks ago, we saw over 23,000 students, children and adults alike walk through the doors of our schools and centres, ready to begin another year of learning and growth.
This time of year is always filled with much energy. Our elementary and secondary schools are buzzing with activity, with so many events designed to welcome back our students with open arms and warm hearts. Our adult and vocational centres are also back in full swing.
On the first day of school, there’s nothing quite like the sight of our youngest learners, those entering K4 or K5, their eyes wide with anticipation and their backpacks full of new supplies. I was fortunate to be at Westpark Elementary on the first day of school, welcoming students that were new and returning to the school. As I toured the school, I saw a sign on one of the classroom doors that said “Everyone belongs, everyone is welcome here”. A few days later, I was at Clearpoint Elementary to participate in their annual kindergarten balloon parade – a longstanding tradition that has the students in grades one through six line the walkway outside of the school and welcome the newest students to their community. It was heartwarming to see their small faces light up with joy and wonder as their schoolmates cheered them on and held up banners saying “Welcome to Clearpoint”, “Bienvenue à Clearpoint”. These moments capture the excitement of new beginnings and the unlimited potential that lies ahead.
The staff in our schools and centres work hard to create a welcoming environment for all who come through their doors. From corn roasts and BBQs that bring families and staff together in a celebration of community, to curriculum nights where parents can engage with teachers and learn about the exciting year ahead, these events foster a sense of collaboration and belonging. I look forward to my ongoing visits with staff and students throughout the year.
Yet, as we experience these new beginnings, we acknowledge that this is also a time of endings and farewells. Tonight marks the last meeting of our council, and so I will take a moment to reflect on the dedication and service of our commissioners. Some of you will choose to run for re-election, continuing your commitment to our school board community. Others will bid us farewell, moving on to new adventures and opportunities.
To all of our commissioners, regardless of whether you are leaving or planning to return, I extend my deepest gratitude for your service. I offer particular words of gratitude to Chair Kelley, Vice-Chair Berger, and outgoing Chair of the executive committee, Eric Bender. Public education is strengthened by the involvement of community members, and as commissioners you were elected to represent this community voice. Your leadership, vision, and unwavering support have been instrumental in shaping the educational experiences of our students. The collaborative and respectful ways in which our council has worked with each other and with the Lester B. Pearson administrative team of this board for the last several years has been noted and deeply appreciated. Together, we have faced adversity and challenges with the belief that all problems have solutions, and that consensus can be reached through active listening and honest dialogue. Thank you for being the champions of public education and representing our interests to other levels of government.
I am personally grateful for the affirmation and support of council that I receive in my role as Director General. I look forward to our continued work together as the next council of the Lester B. Pearson School Board takes shape.
As we look to the future, let us move forward in a spirit of collaboration, innovation, and compassion that defines our community. Together, we will continue to create a nurturing and inspiring environment for our students, ensuring that each learner has an opportunity to succeed and flourish.
