Eddy Nolan: Gone but Not Forgotten
by Darren Becker
As members of the Terry Fox Elementary School community get ready for the annual Terry Fox Run this Friday, September 20th to raise money for cancer research many will still be mourning the loss of Eddy Nolan.
Nolan, who was a local hero and inspiration to so many members of the Lester B. Pearson School Board community, both young and old, passed away in April of this year after waging a long battle against cancer. He was a regular fixture at different Terry Fox Runs for many years and his own experience with the disease, and those of family members, along with the example set by Terry Fox, led Eddy to spend many years of his life championing fund-raising efforts to find a cure for cancer.
Members of the Terry Fox Elementary School community wanted to do something special to honour Eddy’s memory during this year’s fundraising event.
Terry Fox Elementary School Principal Doug Stewart answered the call and said there are several activities planned including a slide show featuring photographs with Eddy and students from over the years, a moment of silence in his honour as well as an appearance by Eddy’s widow Mary.
“Eddy may be gone but he is still missed tremendously. That is why it is so important for us to continue honouring his memory. He was always the living embodiment of Terry Fox for our students and staff. He gave so much back to our community even if he was living with a lot of pain during the last few years of his life. He still holds a very special place in our hearts and Friday’s ceremony is just one way for us to come together and say thank you to Eddy for everything he did for cancer research and for inspiring our community for so many years,” said Principal Stewart.
