Spotlight: Mme. Charlie Abbott of Westwood Jr.
by Chloë Ranaldi
Since 2016, Mme. Abbott has been imparting her knowledge of the French language to students at Westwood Junior High School.
“My favourite part of teaching is being surrounded by all the students, helping them learn French, and making the experience as enjoyable and dynamic as possible to ensure they really enjoy the class.”
Beyond her classroom, Mme Abbott cherishes her moments coaching various sports at the school, including soccer, badminton, and basketball. These experiences hold a special place in her heart because they allow her to connect with students outside of the academic setting.
“I’ve had some great moments in class and while coaching. It’s those times interacting with students, whether on the field or in the gym, that I truly treasure. I’ve coached a variety of sports at the school, and each one offers a unique opportunity to bond with the students.”
She says working with students also keeps her learning and growing.
“I’ve learned a lot from them, whether it’s staying on top of new trends or realizing that just because something works one year, doesn’t mean it will work the next.” She adds, “Through my students, I’ve come to understand that I need to continuously adjust my approach to meet their evolving needs.”
Ms. Haller Westwood Jr. Principal praised Charlie’s dedication to her students.
“Charlie is an exceptional teacher because she genuinely cares about her students and prioritizes building meaningful relationships. She connects with everyone in a way that makes each student feel valued and important,” said Ms. Haller.
“Her passion for teaching shines through her infectious enthusiasm, creating a positive and engaging classroom environment. Charlie is highly adaptable, constantly finding creative ways to support her students’ growth. As a dedicated team player, she collaborates effectively with colleagues to foster a strong and supportive learning community.”
