St. Thomas High Student Receives Provincial Cadet Honour

by Dan Mullins

On a winter evening at the Royal Montreal Regiment, the 2862 Westmount Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps gathered for their annual Mess Dinner. Among the cadets in polished boots and pressed uniforms, one stood out: St. Thomas High School’s Sergeant Daniella Mo, recognized with one of the province’s highest cadet honours.

Mo, a Grade 10 student in International Baccalaureate program at St. Thomas, was awarded the Army Cadet Medal of Merit with Rodger Bar, a distinction given to very few cadets across Quebec each year. The Rodger Bar celebrates the leadership and commitment of third-year cadets in the Silver Star training level and honours the legacy of Major-General Elliot Rodger, the first Colonel Commandant of the Royal Canadian Army Cadets.

Reflecting on her training, Mo spoke about how she welcomed the challenges that came with it. “My favourite part about being in third-year training was getting to try new activities like the Silver Star Expedition Weekend, where we spent a weekend biking, and the winter field training exercise, where I built an improvised shelter,” she said. “In 2026, I hope to go to the Drill and Instructor summer course. I want to get better at drill and to be able to teach other people drill.”

Mo is equally grounded in her school life. “I like how St. Thomas offers a wide variety of support and resources to the students,” she said. “Whether it be academically related, non-academically related, or even if a student just needs to talk it out, there’s always someone available to help.” Mo has been a St. Thomas student since Grade 7, where her favourite subject is English.

Her experiences as a cadet engagement at school reflect a student who embraces new challenges, seeks leadership opportunities, and values support within her learning environment.

Mo’s accomplishment is a point of pride not only for her cadet corps, but for her school community as well. As she looks ahead to the next stages of her cadet journey and high school years, Mo carries with her both the honour of the Rodger Bar and the steady support of the St. Thomas and Lester B. Pearson School Board community.

Congratulations, Daniella!
