Sunshine Academy’s Multicultural Family Evening: Many Cultures, One School
by Simone Viger
Recently, Sunshine Academy warmly welcomed students, families, staff, and community members to its vibrant Multicultural Family Evening, “Many Cultures, One School.” This inspiring event celebrated the rich cultural diversity that strengthens the fabric of the school community, bringing together around 50 attendees for a joyful evening of learning, sharing, and connection.
Seven interactive cultural stations were hosted by families and staff, representing Jamaica & Guyana, Italy, Venezuela, Ukraine, Scotland, Japan, and Poland. Each station featured traditional clothing, artifacts, storybooks, games, paintings, and textiles, providing attendees with immersive opportunities to explore and appreciate different heritages. Children received cultural passports, collecting stickers from each station to encourage engagement and discovery.
A highlight of the evening was the delicious multicultural food sampling, made possible by generous donations and subsidies from local businesses like SkyBird Asian Grill, Al Quds, and Ares Kitchen Supply. Guests enjoyed a variety of flavors, from matcha cookies and drinks to hearty meals reflecting the represented cultures.
The event opened with a heartfelt welcome, a Territorial Land Acknowledgment, and a thoughtful apology for scheduling on the eve of Eid al-Adha, emphasizing the school’s commitment to respect and inclusion. Throughout the evening, colorful greetings in multiple languages, created by students, decorated the gym walls, adding warmth and vibrancy.
Families appreciated the selfie station adorned with flags representing the global backgrounds of all students, fostering pride and belonging. Attendees praised the event as “a beautiful celebration of identity, heritage, and unity,” with many expressing excitement to see it grow as an annual tradition.
This event stands as a wonderful example for other school communities, showcasing how shared culture, food, and stories can build stronger connections and celebrate diversity in meaningful ways.
