Impaired Driving Accident Simulation at Mac High
submitted by Robert McQuaid & Jessica Vaillancourt, teachers, Macdonald High School
On April 15, the Work-Oriented Training Pathways (WOTP) program, alongside all grade 11 students from Macdonald High School, participated in a collaborative initiative with John Abbott College aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.
Students made their way to the John Abbott campus, where they encountered a simulated accident scenario. Instructors from John Abbott’s Police Technology and Paramedic programs, along with local firefighters from Montreal, were present to demonstrate the various steps involved when first responders arrive at the scene of an accident.
During the simulation, the doors of the cars were removed, and emergency procedures were enacted on the injured parties. This hands-on experience allowed students to witness the realities of such critical incidents, illustrating the gravity of impaired driving in a way that words alone often fail to convey.
Participants left the event with a heightened awareness and understanding of how swiftly and perilously life can change due to impaired driving.
