Autism Awareness at St. John Fisher Jr.

by Marilyn Santucci
St. John Fisher Jr. recently hosted an assembly focused on autism awareness, welcoming guest speaker Steven Atme—a musician, creative arts teacher, speaker, and autism advocate who was diagnosed with autism at the age of four.

Steven opened the assembly by sharing his personal story. As a non-verbal child, he faced significant challenges with communication, comprehension, and social integration, including experiences of bullying at school. With the strong support of his family and educators, he gradually developed his voice and built the skills needed to express himself and connect with others.

Through music, Steven discovered a powerful form of communication. Largely self-taught, he later went on to study piano at the McGill University Conservatory of Music, where he earned his certification after seven years of training.

Today, Steven performs, composes, and teaches, using his journey to inspire others—especially individuals with autism and special needs—to embrace their strengths and pursue their passions. He also serves as Musical Director for I Can Dream Theatre and has been recognized for his contributions to the arts and advocacy, including performances at Rideau Hall.

“Steven is generous with his time and quickly built meaningful connections with both staff and students. His story of resilience, love, and support has led to true success. It is a story that deserves to be heard and shared, helping to raise awareness and foster greater understanding of autism,” said Eve Marie Durand, Principal at St John Fisher Junior.

He concluded the assembly by performing two beautiful pieces: an original composition and Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog from The Muppets. The gymnasium fell silent as students were captivated by his piano playing and voice. After his performance, he invited students to reflect on their future aspirations, reminding them that anything is possible—and that his own journey is proof of that.
