Battle of the Books 2025
submitted by Molly Richter, Library Technician for the LBPSB library technicians
On April 3rd, families, staff, commissioners, and administration gathered to watch the 13th annual LBPSB Battle of the Books in the boardroom at head office. Teams from Lakeside Academy, Lasalle Community Comprehensive High School, Macdonald High School, and Pierrefonds Community High School, having already competed at the school and regional levels, vied for the honor of being board level champions.
Started in 2012 by a LBPSB school library technician, the Battle of the Books competition has been held each spring – even during the pandemic. Although only LBPSB high schools competed at first, the competition has grown to now include four school boards.
The four teams: Lakeside Academy, Lasalle Community Comprehensive High School, Macdonald High School, and Pierrefonds Community High School
Organized by library professionals, high school students form teams in September and meet frequently throughout the year in their free time to discuss books and practice with their coaches. A diverse selection of 12 young adult titles is chosen each year by library professionals, who then write questions based on those books for students to answer in competition. There are several levels of competition that result in the top four teams competing at the board level. The winner receives a banner to hang in their school library and will also go on to represent the Lester B. Pearson School Board at the ultimate battle. All students also receive a book of their choice as a prize.
This year, although scores were close, PCHS prevailed, and will go on to the ultimate battle to face off against the top team each from EMSB, QAIS, and SWLSB.
Big congratulations to PCHS!
Many thanks to ESD, admin, fellow staff, and the board for all the support, and for helping foster a love of reading in our students. Heartfelt thanks also to families for supporting these growing readers.
