National Pay it Forward Day
submitted by Stefanie Gervasi, Spiritual Animator
Recognizing National Pay it Forward Day has become a tradition at Beacon Hill. Two years in a row Spiritual Animator Stef Gervasi and Principal Natalie Maurice chose the fifth graders to do this special fundraiser, which prepares them for the grade six kindness committee that is very influential at Beacon Hill Elementary.
The fifth graders, along with their teachers Mme. La France and Ms. Policarpio, gave up time on a weekly basis to help this fundraiser be successful.
The students voted on raising money for an organization that is dear to our school board’s heart: All Access Life created by Daniel O’Connor and Bradley Heaven, which has truly shown us the definition of what paying it forward is. They help so many with disabilities find adaptive technology that can provide a better quality of life.
Once the students had researched the organization, they knew that this was what they wanted to “pay it forward” to. They came up with the idea of a simple dress down day, ‘wear your brightest outfit’ and donate 2$ towards the organization.
They made posters and flyers to promote the fundraiser.
Beacon Hill was fortunate to then have Daniel and Bradley come to their assembly to explain their organization in person and the students felt what it truly meant to give a donation. They raised a little over 500$.
At the end of the day, we want our students to make good choices and be good people. We want to teach them that you don’t need to give a lot, to make a difference. We are grateful for all the contributions given by the Beacon Hill families and hope to continue to pay it forward for many years to come.
