Beads and Bracelets: Over $700 raised for Rosie Animal Adoption

submitted by Martha Farley, Beacon Hill SEED Technician

For the past several months the children at Beacon Hill have been very busy making bracelets for a fund raiser that was recently held at the school. With the help of the daycare and lunch educators, the children made all sorts of amazing jewels, magnets, key chains, earrings, and bracelets.

Over $700 was raised for Rosie Animal Adoption. Rosie’s is a non-profit organization that finds homes for dogs, puppies and older dogs. They have been around the West Island for many years and the organization is run exclusively by volunteers.

Recently, during our lunch hour each class had a chance to come to the daycare and buy some jewelry. A guest speaker named Anne came to the school to talk about Rosie’s and what they do, addressing the whole school population. Anne indicated that the money earned will go toward medical supplies for the animals that are in need, and that there are a lot of dogs who need that medical care.

Beacon Hill Principal Natalie Maurice was very supportive of this project, and daycare educators have been on board with this since it was first mentioned back in the fall.

Special thanks and congratulations go to the grade six girls, Emma Mongeau, Emma Wilson, Morgan Linsdale, Elisa Petrone, Coraline Caron, Nyla and Kayla Broadbridge Kayla and Charlotte Whipps. All of the girls did an excellent job. They were essential to this project and organized themselves, ensuring everyone a job. They made posters and hung them up around the school, and organized the girls who looked after the customers as they arrived to buy their jewelry. They developed a list of rules which was read to the students as they came to buy their jewelry, and which got some laughs, too:

The Rules:
#1 No running, no yelling. (If you do this you get kicked out.)
#2 If you break it, you buy it. (If it wasn’t obvious.)
#3 2 items max.
#4 Don’t try to bamboozle our employees. (Seriously don’t try.)
#5 If you have any questions, please ask one of our employees. (But don’t ask me, I suck at answering questions.)

The Rosie Team

Everyone enjoyed the project and felt that they were a part of something bigger than themselves. They took on a task that will help the most vulnerable animals, dogs who have been abandoned or are too much for their owners, and are returned to shelters. The older children in the school learned something about running a business: how a business works, how to have enough inventory, how to market your product… and how to give back to your community.

Children such as the group that worked on this project provide hope for the future. The students of Beacon Hill have been very supportive of this cause, and thanks go to all those who pitched in to help the vulnerable animals who need homes.
