Change and possibility abound!

by Cindy Finn
In my last two monthly reports, I have spoken about the sense of anticipation and possibility that a new school year brings. In October, I find myself still reflecting on these themes. The provincial election of October 5th has ushered in a new minority government and just a few days ago, we witnessed the naming of our new minister of education. Change and possibility abound! We wish Minister Joël Arseneau all the best in his new functions.

We can expect that this government under Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon will bring a renewed emphasis on priority issues facing education. In the weeks and months ahead, we will carefully review any new announcements and remain focused on what is at the heart of our efforts: the success, well-being, and achievement of every student.

We continue to work toward the objectives as outlined in our current Commitment to Success Plan. This plan is oriented around three main priorities: improving our effectiveness in meeting the needs of diverse learners, strengthening leadership at all levels of the organization, and making social-emotional wellbeing a priority for both students and staff.

First, we remain focused on student achievement and educational success in all its forms. Through targeted supports, evidence-based practices, and a continued commitment to equity, diversity, dignity, and inclusion, we are working to ensure that every student is provided with opportunities to learn and thrive.

Second, we are strengthening leadership across our system. By investing in collaboration, professional learning, and shared accountability, we are empowering school and centre teams to respond effectively to the evolving needs of our students and communities.

Finally, we continue to place considerable emphasis on social-emotional well-being. This is at the heart of what we do, for we are educating the whole person. Creating safe, caring, and inclusive learning environments is fundamental for student engagement, perseverance, and ultimately, success. We recognize that students learn best when they feel supported, valued, and connected with staff. As a school board community, we also have a duty to consider the wellness of our personnel and those who are caring for and educating our students.

Later this week, we will be honouring staff who are celebrating 25 years of service at the Lester B. Pearson School Board. Dedicating one’s career to making a positive difference in the lives of others by working in public education is a noble pursuit worthy of recognition. We thank our staff for their important contributions in service of others.

While there is always more work to do, and while there are always new challenges to face, we are proud of the progress being made. We remain unwavering in our commitment to providing the highest quality educational experience for learners in our community. As Director General, I remain committed to helping ministry officials at all levels better understand our needs and those of the broader English education community. We are eager to work with the new Minister of Education, and we would welcome the opportunity for Minister Arsenau to visit some of our school and centres.
