In both the classroom and on the field, Chelsey Shotton relies on a consistent approach. When there’s pressure, Chelsey says, “I just focus on what is happening in the moment.”
That mindset has carried the St. Thomas High School Secondary 3 student to a notable milestone. Earlier this year, Chelsey was named to the Équipe Relève Aléo, a group of 50 student-athletes from across Quebec, identified among the province’s top emerging talents. The designation marks a key stage in athletic development, when expectations rise alongside academic demands. Each recipient receives a $3,000 bursary and access to ongoing academic and career support.
For the Dollard-des-Ormeaux soccer player, the recognition follows a strong 2025 season that included a gold medal and top scorer honours at the Jeux du Québec. Her focus, however, remains forward. “I’ve learned from my sport over the years,” she explained, “to not focus on the future, but to focus on what you’re doing in the present moment because that is something you can have full control of.”
That approach carries into her school life. Like many student-athletes, Chelsey balances a demanding schedule that requires consistency and structure. Her father, Andrew Shotton, sees the same qualities at work in both settings.
“Chelsey has many great qualities, but her quick understanding of the world around her, attention to detail, drive and focus are the qualities to her success in the classroom and on the field,” Andrew said. “As parents, we prioritize education as this will carry them far,” he continued. At home, academics remain central.
The younger Shotton also draws direct lessons from sport. Over time, those lessons have shaped how she responds to setbacks and expectations. “The most important lesson I learned is to never give up on what you want the most,” she said, “even if something is in your way from achieving that goal, you cannot give on it because you will regret it in the future.”
Leadership is part of that growth. As captain of her soccer team, she emphasizes accountability and example. “I find leadership is very important to have,” she said, “because it sets the standard through my actions… showing discipline in training and in school. It also means showing support to others, encouraging them to reach their fullest potential.”
At St. Thomas, Chelsey’s selection has been met with pride. Principal Dean Graddon identified early on that her achievement was one worth sharing with the broader school community. For her, the recognition marks both progress and possibility. Her goals remain clear: earn a place on the provincial team and continue developing her game.
For now, the approach holds.
