Children's World Academy Celebrates Black History Month with Tap Dancer Justin Jackson

by Helena Tsitouras

Children’s World Academy kicked off Black History Month with an unforgettable and educational experience as they welcomed tap dancer Justin Jackson on February 1st. The school’s gymnasium was filled with excitement as students gathered to watch Justin’s captivating performance and learn about the rich history of tap dancing in North America.

Justin presented to the students with enthusiasm, not only showcasing his talent but also diving into the profound history of tap dancing. His presentation traced the roots of tap dancing back to the era of slavery, highlighting its evolution and influence on various aspects of contemporary culture. From music and dance to fashion and vocabulary, Justin emphasized the significant impact of Black culture on today’s popular culture.

The students were captivated throughout the presentation, absorbing and understanding the historical context, and appreciating the art form. The gymnasium erupted into excitement as Justin incorporated modern music into his performance. He demonstrated how tap dancing can evolve and adapt to the rhythms of popular music.

Grade 6 student Diora M expressed her enthusiasm for the event, saying, “Today was awesome. It was so fun, and I really enjoyed it.” She particularly enjoyed Justin’s tap-dancing performance but also highlighted an essential aspect of the presentation, stating, “I like when he started tap dancing, but also the really important part is that it’s not just about tap dancing, it’s also about being kind to others, and don’t treat anybody differently for their racial or religious background.”

The combination of entertainment and education made this event a truly inspiring start to Black History Month at Children’s World Academy. Justin Jackson’s visit not only showcased the artistry of tap dancing but also instilled important values of kindness, inclusivity, and understanding among the students.

Fortunately, throughout the month of February, Justin Jackson has paid visits to numerous Lester B. Pearson schools. We extend our gratitude to him for sharing his talent, knowledge, and passion for tap dancing. As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, let this event serve as a reminder of the diverse and impactful contributions of Black communities and individuals.
