Democracy in Action at
Children's World Academy

by Tania D’Alessandro

During the months of September and October, students in grade 6 at Children’s World Academy in LaSalle have been learning about different forms of government and preparing for an election simulation for the provincial elections.

Students had the opportunity to meet and ask questions to the mayor of LaSalle, Mme Nancy Blanchet, the MNA representative and newly elected M. Fred Beauchemin, and the honourable MP and Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada,  M. Lametti.

Students had the opportunity to learn about the three levels of government. This unit allowed teachers to raise awareness about the importance of voting and the roles and responsibilities of every citizen. In addition, students learned about the different political systems around the world and compared a democratic with a non-democratic country.

They were inquirers and became very knowledgeable.  Finally, students re-enacted a parliamentary debate with the different roles of the House of Commons. A great way to end this unit!
