Children's World Academy Ice Hockey Program
submitted by Guy Walker, PE Teacher, Children’s World Academy
On Thursday, October 3rd, Children’s World Academy held the inaugural session of their ice hockey program.
The 32 students in Gr 2- 6 who already participate in local ice hockey associations and teams will have 20 practices over the course of the winter at a local arena.
PE teacher and head coach, Guy Walker, along with parent coaches Stefano Giliati, Prat Desai, Jeff Dort, Anthony Di Iorio, Simon Seveno and Joe Sciotto, will lead the students each week through progressions in power skating, stick handling, passing, shooting, puck possession, positional play as well as team systems and other elements of the game.
After a strong showing in an exhibition game last school year as well as a keen interest from parent coaches and principal, Lisa Baylis, ice time at the Jacques Lemaire Arena was secured and the program was born. Many thanks to the coaches and their expertise- both on and off the ice. Student participation, effort, improvement and smiles after each session show the value of the program thus far.
In addition to the 20 training sessions, exhibition games for Gr 4- 6 students against other schools and programs are planned for this year as well as participation in a tournament or 2.
Keep your stick on the ice, CWA!
