Dorval Elementary Choir Illuminates Dorval Municipal Tree Lighting Ceremony
by Dan Mullins
During the weeks leading up to the holidays, schools and centres have participated in many seasonal activities. One such festive occasion was the Dorval municipal Tree Lighting event, where the Dorval Elementary Choir sang just before Santa’s arrival and the lighting of the tree.
Guided by the school’s Music Teacher, Suzanne Smyth, the choir had been practising at lunchtimes since early November. They had learned a full repertoire of Christmas tunes, including Jingle Bell Rock, O Christmas Tree, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Chandelle de Paix, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, and I love Xmas!
With Dorval Elementary’s principal Heather-Anne Denton looking on, and conducted by Ms. Smyth, the students sang with great enthusiasm — despite the heavy rain on that Friday evening. Numerous other attendees did not let the weather dampen their spirits either, as large crowds assembled to listen to and applaud the singers and catch a glimpse of Santa.
After their performance, Marc Doret, the Mayor of Dorval, introduced Santa and the huge spruce tree festooned with lights was lit! Several elves, Dorval’s mascot Jet, a winter Princess, and Frozen’s Elsa, Olaf, and Sven were also in attendance, to the delight of many.
Following the tree lighting, a singer performed holiday hits and the Christmas market’s stalls welcomed shoppers until the closing of the event at 9 pm, when slightly wet but nonetheless aglow, the last of the revellers headed home.
