Dorval Students Take Action for a Cleaner Environment
by Patricia Aldred, Community and Personal Development Animator (CAPDA)
Recently, Cycle 2 students from Dorval Elementary rolled up their sleeves for a schoolyard and park clean-up led by GRAME (Groupe de recommandations et d’actions pour un meilleur environnement) in collaboration with the Fondation Ruisseau Bouchard.
The weather cooperated beautifully, and it was wonderful to spend time outside contributing positively to our environment and our community.
During this hands-on activity, each class spent time outdoors collecting litter from the school grounds and the neighbouring park. Students also learned how to identify and sort what they had collected, discussing how waste should be properly disposed of or recycled. By the end of the day, they had gathered an impressive 18 pounds of litter — 9 pounds of garbage and 9 pounds of recycling!
The activity wasn’t just about cleaning up — it was also about connecting students to their local environment. GRAME educators introduced students to the history and ecology of Bouchard Creek, a historic local waterway that has appeared on maps since the early 1600s and still flows into Lac Saint-Louis today.
The event was a resounding success — students were proud of their efforts, and the schoolyard looked better than ever by the end of the day. A big thank you to GRAME educators, Allegra and Mireiile, as well as the Fondation Ruisseau Bouchard for inspiring our young environmental stewards!
