Exploring Culture at Beacon Hill Elementary

by Marilyn Santucci
At a recent Cultural Day assembly, students at Beacon Hill Elementary School were treated to a lively and inspiring celebration of music, culture, and creativity. The event was part of a new school-wide initiative introduced this year to help students learn more about cultures and countries around the world.

Throughout the school year, each grade level selected a country or region to explore and present during monthly assemblies. Students shared songs, dances, interesting facts, language, traditions, and cultural activities with their peers. Kindergarten 4 focused on Italy, Kindergarten 5 explored Spain, Grade 1 learned about Ireland, Grade 2 studied Australia and England, Grade 3 presented Mexico, Grade 4 highlighted Portugal, Grade 5 focused on Brazil, and Grade 6 explored South America. Some homerooms also chose to complete individual country projects.

As part of this initiative, Montreal-based steelpan artist Pong was invited to the school to share his passion for music, culture, and the arts. Known for his imaginative work and community-focused projects, Pong encourages self-expression, creativity, and cultural appreciation through his performances and artistic initiatives. During his visit, students learned about his artistic journey, the history and significance of the steelpan drum, and the inspiration behind his work.

Pong also performed a variety of upbeat songs on the steelpan, including Happy by Pharrell Williams and Can’t Stop the Feeling! by Justin Timberlake, creating an energetic atmosphere throughout the gymnasium. Students quickly got caught up in the excitement, singing along, dancing, and clapping to the music.

The assembly was a joyful celebration of culture and community that brought students together through the universal language of music. Pong’s visit was a meaningful extension of Beacon Hill’s cultural learning initiative and left a lasting impression on students and staff alike, encouraging everyone to embrace creativity, individuality, and global understanding.
