Gordon Robertson Beauty Academy Raises Funds for Breast Cancer Research
by Sonia Ruivo
October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and throughout the month, staff and students at Gordon Robertson Beauty Academy (GRBA) rolled up their sleeves, got busy running fundraisers, and participated in events to help raise funds for breast cancer research and treatment.
On October 11, teachers Denise Hosni, Tina Mercuri, and Vany DeAndrade organized a Date Night. Twenty-seven students volunteered their time and skills to offer pedicures, hair treatments, and blow-dries to 22 clients. The event included door prizes and raffles for beautiful gift baskets. Spots sold out within days and the event raised $1185. Local merchants also pitched in and donated special treats.
Raise Craze and Gala
On October 23, GRBA students assisted with the 8th annual Raise Craze, held at the MUHC. Students shaved the heads of those who raised money for the worthy cause. Funds raised support the MUHC Breast Clinic’s Wellness Program. CTV and CBC were on hand to interview volunteers and our students.
Finally on October 27, four students were on hand at the Annual Fundraiser Gala, Magic of Hope 2023 event to help guests with touch-ups of their hair and makeup. This gave guests a chance to be camera-ready when they had their pictures taken in one of the photo booths, which were sponsored by a variety of companies. GRBA’s distributors, Baronesse, GM Collins, Belmonda, Schwartzkopf, and Beaute Cantin, donated professional skin and hair care goods for gift baskets.
The gifts of hope for the Gala evening on October 27 also included GRBA merchandise and gift certificates.
Throughout the month, students and staff also held a variety of fun and tasty fundraisers including a pizza lunch, samosas lunch, “jeans” day, and others. The total amount raised during October was $2010.80. Congratulations to the entire GRBA team!
All proceeds from the October fundraising and Date Night will go towards Pink in the City, which is partnering with the MUHC foundation.
