An Interview with the Parents' Committee Chair

by Joanne Malowany

We took few minutes earlier today to have a chat with Shane Ross, the Chair of the Parents’ Committee at the LBPSB. Not sure what a Parents’ Committee is? Perfect! This article is exactly what you need. Take a quick read below and learn all about who they are and what they do.

What is a Parents’ Committee?
Every year, typically in September, schools have their Annual General Assembly where interested parents are elected to sit on the school’s Governing Board. From the parent members of the Governing Board, one member is elected to also sit on the Parents’ Committee. An alternate parent is also selected for instances where the first selection is not available.

Simply put, the PC is comprised of one parent representative per school.

How often do you meet?
The PC typically meets once a month and normally about 9 to 10 times per school year. The meetings used to take place in person, but pivoted to online meetings during COVID. For now, meetings are still taking place online but are expected to transition back to in-person meetings this school year.

What is the purpose of this committee?
The purpose of the Parents’ Committee is to serve as an advisory and consultative body to the school board’s Council of Commissioners and administrative leadership. The Parents’ Committee is designed to give the parent community a voice and an opportunity to weigh in on issues or concerns pertaining to matters of the school board. By law, the Parents’ Committee must be consulted by the school board when considering major policy or curriculum changes.

What do you discuss at meetings?
Meetings generally cover topics ranging anywhere from an annual review of a school board policy to any current issues or concerns facing students or parents within the Lester B. Pearson School Board. These topics may originate from the board leadership, a PC member, or a parent of the LBPSB community.

Why is the PC important?
The PC is important as it serves as the primary representative voice of the parent community of the LBPSB.

Why do people get involved with PC?
It’s a great way for you, as a parent, to get more involved in your child’s educational experience and get a better understanding of the system. It’s also a great way to connect with like-minded people who want to contribute to their communities in a meaningful way.

Why did you decide to get involved with PC?
I got involved with the PC because I saw the landscape of the educational experience of English students changing rapidly and I wanted a seat at the table not just to better understand how the decisions were being made but to be in a position to positively impact them as well.

What do you like best about being involved with PC?
I like understanding the details of the conversations surrounding the educational experience. Through my role as Chair, and with the help of many other dedicated parents, I’ve had the pleasure of helping many parents better understand the system and processes within the educational system. It’s been truly rewarding knowing that you’ve helped a child by helping their parents navigate effectively and improve their child’s educational experience because they are more informed.

What’s your favorite color?
