Lights, camera, action! Black & Gold is an annual variety show that showcases amazing talent where singers, dancers, musicians, and performers are in the spotlight.
The 3-day show presents many of the incredible talents that John Rennie High School has to offer, both on and off the stage. Hard work and dedication from the students and staff involved are put to the test in creating a fabulous show. How long does it take for a show of this nature to take place? Simply ask the heads of Black & Gold, Priya Rockman, Samantha Heitner, Victoria D’Elia, Mathilda Johnson and Robin Theriault; they have been working on this show since April 2023!
Black & Gold has been on stage in the Louise Chalmers Auditorium since the 1950’s, where 2020 was the only year where there wasn’t a show due to COVID-19. Every year, Black & Gold is showcased through a theme. This year, the theme of the show is “Through The Ages Tour”. There were songs from the 1970’s all the way to the 2020’s, featuring artists such as Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Adele, Queen and more!
The MC’s (also known as “Master of Ceremonies”), Ryan Johnston, Priya Rockman, Abaan Akabar, and Nakeith Horne kept the audience members engaged and entertained throughout the show. Their humour and personalities added a level of joy and entertainment to the show!
John Rennie High School is proud of its students and Black & Gold is one of the many events that is all planned by their very own students. With the help and guidance of dedicated staff members, the entire team creates a show that keeps the audience singing and dancing in their seats.
A special thank you to Mr. Addie, who has been leading the production of Black & Gold for 14 years; Mr. Webb who has put many hours in helping with tech, in addition to Ian Klempan, an alumnus who continues to help put on shows in his role as a Technical Director. This mouth dropping production would not have been possible without them!
The talent is not only seen on stage. The students behind the scenes also show their talent with their creativity, communication and organizational skills to create a smooth running show. The crew, with the guidance of the stage managers, paint, design and build the set. Their attention to detail and creativity allow for the artists to shine bright. Preparing the stage for the next scene and selecting the music during transitions are added artistic elements.
This year, Lester B. Pearson School Board is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and John Rennie High School’s Black & Gold added their special touch to the celebration. These performances welcomed many guests such as current students, family members, staff, alumni and community leaders, just to name a few. Special guests Dr. Cindy Finn, Director General of Lester B. Pearson School Board, Global News reporters as well as alumna Felicia Parrillo, were part of the Friday evening crowd. Daneil O’Connor and alumnus Bradley Heaven, from All Acces Life, also came to watch the show on Friday. John Rennie High School and Black & Gold make the community something to be proud about.
Not only do the performances leave you dancing in your seats or reminiscing about favourite tunes, but a small portion of the money made from tickets go to Canada Helps and PEF.
Way to go John Rennie High School and Black and Gold 2024! A show for the ages.
