JRHS Model UN Brings Global Diplomacy to Life

submitted by Chris Webb, Teacher
The air in the gymnasium usually hums with the sounds of basketballs and sneakers, but once a year, it undergoes a profound transformation. The hallways of John Rennie High School (JRHS) shift from a typical suburban high school into a high-stakes forum for global diplomacy. This is the JRHS Model United Nations, an annual cornerstone of the Grade 11 experience that challenges our students to step out of their daily routines and onto the international stage.

Beyond the Classroom

For our senior students, Model UN isn’t just an assignment—it’s a rite of passage. By representing countries from across the globe, students are forced to navigate the complexities of international relations and the delicate art of diplomacy firsthand. Whether debating climate policy, human rights, or global security, these young delegates are pushed to look far beyond their own perspectives. This immersive environment fosters the empathy, strategic thinking, and negotiation skills that are absolutely essential for a 21st-century global citizen.

Insight from the Front Lines

A highlight of this year’s event was the presence of our distinguished keynote speaker, Dr. Christopher Labos. As a McGill-affiliated cardiologist, epidemiologist, and a familiar voice in the Montreal GazetteCTV, and CBC, Dr. Labos brought a unique perspective to the assembly. He spoke to the students about the intersection of science, public policy, and communication—reminding them that the ability to synthesize complex information and present it persuasively is a superpower in any field, from medicine to geopolitics.

A Tradition of Leadership

As our Grade 11s prepare for graduation and the world beyond our doors, the JRHS Model UN serves as a final, vital sharpening of their leadership tools. It celebrates their curiosity and their willingness to engage with uncomfortable truths about our world. They learn that progress isn’t found in shouting, but in the slow, meticulous work of consensus-building.

“At JRHS, we don’t just teach history; we give our students the tools to write the future.”

This tradition continues to be a shining example of the John Rennie spirit. We aren’t just preparing students for exams; we are preparing them to lead, to listen, and to innovate. Congratulations to all the delegates for a spectacular session—the future looks bright in your hands.
