LaSalle Elementary Walk for Truth and Reconciliation

LaSalle Elementary Jr. and Sr. Walk for Truth and Reconciliation

by Stef Gervasi,
Community And Personal Development Animator (CAPDA)

Lasalle Senior and Junior did their first community walk for TRC. The students at both schools have been talking and doing different projects to honour all of the children and families that were affected by residential schools.

The students at the Lasalle schools have great appreciation for the Indigenous culture. They have students, staff and families who are First Nation.

A beautiful assembly was held on September 30th. Marie France , who is the art teacher at Lasalle Senior, created a symbolic tree. On this tree, each student had the opportunity to display their tags with beads that carried powerful messages.

After the ceremony ended, both Lasalle Junior and Senior took a community walk. The Senior students on one side and Juniors waving to the Seniors from the other side.

Cars honked and pedestrians stopped to tell the children that the message they were sending was beautiful.

As we explained to our students. This is not a day of celebration, but a day of reflection.

It was a very proud moment for the students of LaSalle. As Jasilda (a grade six student) said at the assembly, “at LaSalle Senior, we choose kindness and respect.”
