LBPSB Phys. Ed. Teacher Receives National Award

Meaghan Macro, a physical educator at PETES, is being recognized on the national stage for her outstanding contributions to student health and well-being.
At the 2026 PHE Canada National Conference, Macro was presented with the National Award for Teaching Excellence in Physical Education and Health, an honour that recognizes exceptional Canadian educators.
For Macro, receiving the award reflects years of dedication to her students and her passion for physical education.
“Receiving this award is incredibly meaningful to me because it reflects the relationships, growth, and experiences I’ve shared with my students in my 18 years of teaching. Personally, it is both humbling and motivating to be recognized for work that I genuinely care so deeply about and am so passionate about.”
Professionally, it reinforced just how meaningful her role is and the lasting impact she can have on her students. Macro said learning she would be recognized at the national conference was both surprising and deeply emotional.
“I was honestly surprised and felt incredibly honoured. It was a breath-taking moment as I reflected on my teaching career and everything that I have learned and accomplished so far. I thought to myself that I would not be the teacher I am today had it not been for all of the amazing students who I have had the opportunity to teach but also, gratitude to family and all of my colleagues throughout my career so far, especially at the beginning of my career, who influenced my teaching journey, supported me and always believed in me. I am fortunate to have so many wonderful individuals in my life. Being recognized at the 2026 PHE Canada National Conference is especially meaningful because it reflects the heart of my work every day: supporting physical education and health as a vital part of student success and well-being.”
Macro credits her mother as the inspiration behind her decision to become a physical educator.
“My mom inspired me to become a physical education teacher. She helped me come to the realization that growing up, physical activity gave me opportunities to challenge myself, work with others, and develop resilience. I started volunteering with children at a young age, and combined with my love of physical activity, it quickly became clear that becoming a Phys. Ed. teacher was the right path for me. I wanted to create the same positive experiences for young people that I had growing up, and help students discover activities that make them feel confident, included, and motivated to live healthy, active lives. My mom was spot on (moms really do know everything!). Once I started at McGill University, I knew for sure I was exactly where I was meant to be.”
In her classes, Macro focuses on building confidence by creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every student feels valued.
“I believe confidence grows when students feel safe, supported and listened to. I focus on creating an inclusive environment where every student feels valued regardless of skill level or experience. I encourage students to try new things and step outside of their comfort zone. I value personal growth over comparison and celebrate effort, progress and teamwork! I also try to expose students to a wide variety of physical activities so they can discover something they genuinely enjoy in hopes that they continue being active after they have left my class. My goal is for students to see physical activity not as something they have to do, but as something that can positively support their physical well-being throughout life.”
Beyond physical education, Macro hopes her students leave her classes with lifelong lessons.
“Beyond physical education class, I hope students leave my class with tools to engage in a fun and lifelong active lifestyle. I hope that I have enhanced their physical literacy skills and given them the confidence to understand that growth comes from trying and perseverance. I hope that they develop respect for others and understand that the ability to work as a TEAM will help you succeed.”
Through her commitment to student growth, inclusion and lifelong wellness, Macro continues to make a lasting impact — one that has now been recognized at the national level.
“Meaghan continues to amaze me on a daily basis through her unwavering dedication to her students and to the profession of physical education. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that every student has meaningful opportunities to grow, develop confidence, and experience success. She regularly introduces students to new activities and ensures they gain a well-rounded understanding of sports, movement, teamwork, and healthy living. Her programming is thoughtful, engaging, and intentionally designed to meet the diverse needs of her learners,” says Allan Fink, Principal at Pierre Elliot Trudeau Elementary.
