Lujain Hamdaqa Receives Prestigious Recognition for Community Service

by Darren Becker

Lujain Hamdaqa, a graduating student from Pierrefonds Community High School, has been named the inaugural winner of the Quebec English School Boards Association’s (QESBA) Kathleen Weil and Michael Novak Community Engagement Award. The award will be offered annually to a deserving graduating student from the English public-school network in Quebec.

Lujain is one of two Student Commissioners on the Lester B. Pearson School Board’s Council of Commissioners. The award along with a $2000.00 bursary was presented to Lujain during PCHS’ graduation ceremony. Nine other students who were local school board winners will receive a certificate and a $500.00 bursary.

“To be a recipient of this award serves as acknowledgement of and reassurance that I have made an impact on my community. The word community has many different meanings and interpretations, in truth, it is an abstract concept. Over the years, I have come to understand that what truly defines a community, are the people. Throughout my experiences volunteering and engaging in my community in different sectors, I have had the privilege of meeting and being inspired by so many amazing and powerful individuals, so it is from my heart that I say we are all winners,”

Underlining the importance and value to student excellence outside the classroom and for community service, this award will be presented to one student chosen from among the nine English language school boards in Quebec and the Centre de Service du Littoral as special status.

“I am so honored to have received this award, and honestly surprised. When I was nominated to apply, I put my best work forward, but with no expectations because even just considering my own circle – I am constantly being inspired. I am forever grateful for those within and outside of the Lester B. Pearson community for their guidance and support of my journey,” said Lujain.
