Behind the Scenes, Making a Difference: Maple Grove’s Dedicated Caretaker
by Marilyn Santucci
At Maple Grove Elementary, one familiar face has been quietly keeping the school running smoothly for nearly 15 years. Philip Papasotiriou, known to students and staff alike as “Mr. Phil,” has been a cornerstone of the school since his first day.
Originally from Montreal, Philip spent part of his childhood in Greece before returning to Canada in his twenties. He has dedicated his career to ensuring the school environment is safe, clean, and welcoming for everyone.
“My job basically covers everything,” he explains. “From cleaning and repairs to deliveries, making sure the building is safe, and reporting any damages.” His day-to-day tasks often go beyond what most people would expect, including helping students untie their boots or open their thermoses.
For Philip, the appeal of working at an elementary school goes beyond the tasks themselves. “I love it here. It’s like a small community, like my big family,” he says. The respect and curiosity of the students make his work more rewarding. “They’re always asking questions, curious about what I’m doing, and happy to see me in their class.”
He emphasizes the importance of his role in maintaining the school. “A school has a lot of responsibilities. There are sick kids, vandalism, deliveries, snow to shovel…sometimes one person isn’t enough. Someone must be there to take care of it all.”
What makes Maple Grove Elementary truly special, according to Philip, is the community. “I like the area; I like the kids. Seeing their smiles, helping whenever I can—that’s what makes it enjoyable.” He also shares a thoughtful message for students who aspire to follow in his footsteps: “Try university first, maybe a trade. But if it doesn’t work out, then you can become like me—if you like helping and aren’t allergic to cleaning!”
Over the years, Philip has grown attached not only to the school building but also to the people within it. “I get attached to buildings, people, and relationships. It’s hard when kids graduate, but even when I see them outside across the street at Lakeside Academy, they still say hi. That brings a smile to my face.”
Philip Papasotiriou’s dedication goes far beyond the typical job description. He’s not just maintaining a school; he’s nurturing a community, one student smile at a time.
