March is Nutrition Month!

submitted by Miranda Greco

Let’s celebrate the world of nutrition and bring awareness to healthy lifestyle habits. This month’s theme is “Think Before You Drink,” which encourages people to practice making informed beverage choices!

My name is Miranda Greco and I’m a registered dietitian for the educational services department at the school board. I collaborate with teachers on different projects, provide nutrition resources to include in their lesson plans, and deliver workshops on a variety of topics.

This month, let’s tackle the topic of adequate hydration. More than half of our bodies are made up of water. As a result, it’s important to replace the fluids lost through daily activities with water. However, many children and adolescents choose to drink sweetened beverages every day instead. It is therefore vital to educate them on the effects these beverages have on their bodies and highlight healthier alternatives.

Our nutrition website features information posters on topics such as added sugars, understanding nutrition facts tables, ingredient lists, and hydration tips. Additionally, you will find activity sheets, games, and a beverage tracker challenge. Click here to browse this year’s theme on our nutrition website.

In addition, I’ve collaborated on a nutrition month project with the art consultant at the board, Frank Caracciolo. The goal is to raise awareness about the added sugars present in sweetened beverages while gaining insight into the students’ current beverage choices. We’ve created a survey in which students from all schools within the board are invited to participate. Data will be analyzed, and results will be shared in an upcoming edition of the Pearson news. Click here to access the survey!

Schools can also join our Sip Smart campaign by asking students to design posters and pamphlets to raise awareness about the health impact of sweetened beverages.

If you’re a teacher interested in participating and haven’t received the project details, please contact me at mgreco03@lbpearson.ca or Frank Caracciolo at fcaracciolo@lbpsb.qc.ca.

Let’s celebrate Nutrition Month and encourage our students to sip smarter today!
