New Mural at PEC Bridges Electrotechnology and Interior Design
by Marilyn Santucci
A new mural was unveiled on November 4th at the Pearson Electrotechnology Centre (PEC). The installation brings together elements of electricity, telecommunications, technology and interior design. These themes are embedded in an abstract/modern design artwork.
Covering 4 walls, the mural was designed and painted by Jasmin Guérard Alie et Simon Bachand of Art du Commun. The mural was traced at night using a projector and a skyjack, in successive layers. It was then painted in the daylight.
The first section of the mural features a faraday disk, marking the beginning of the story of technological artifacts. Next, the artist’s depiction of the dynamo, one of the earliest electric generators, is showcased, symbolizing the advent of electricity generation. The circular shape of the dynamo is a recurring motif throughout the mural’s concept.
The mural also includes a 19th-century magneto generator and a telegraph, highlighting key milestones in the evolution of modern communication. The final section of the mural features decorative elements, such as fans, and a color palette that reflects the Interior Decorating Program.
At the far-right end of the mural, a Morse code message spells out “Pearson,” with plans to eventually add “Electrotechnology Centre” as well.
Ribbon Cutting
The unveiling and ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by Maya Vodanovic, mayor of Lachine, students and staff, and members of the Lachine community. Christie Brown, Director of PEC, opened the ceremony with a few words, followed by speeches from the mayor, and muralists. A group photo was taken at the end of the event to commemorate the day.
The mural was made possible through a collaboration between the city of Lachine, and the Lester B. Pearson School Board.
