Sam Ojeda Visits Clearpoint to Celebrate Indigenous Heritage Month

by Sarah Zaslov, CAPDA
To honour and celebrate the beginning of Indigenous Heritage Month, Clearpoint Elementary School had the privilege of welcoming Indigenous guest speaker Sam Ojeda for a meaningful and engaging presentation that encouraged students to reflect on their relationship with the environment and their responsibility to care for the world around them.

Drawing on Indigenous teachings, Mr. Ojeda spoke about the importance of Mother Earth and the interconnectedness of all living things. Through stories, discussion, and personal experiences, he helped students understand how human actions can impact the planet and the importance of making choices that demonstrate respect for the environment.

Mr. Ojeda also provided students with a rich cultural learning experience. He introduced them to elements of Indigenous language, explained the significance of his regalia, and shared aspects of his culture and traditions. Students were captivated as he demonstrated traditional flute playing and introduced them to powwow dances, helping them gain a deeper appreciation for Indigenous cultural practices and ways of knowing.

The presentation offered students a valuable opportunity to learn directly from an Indigenous voice and to deepen their understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and perspectives. Mr. Ojeda’s message of respecting the Earth, one another, and of cultural diversity resonated strongly with students and staff alike. His visit left a lasting impression and inspired us all to be thoughtful caretakers of both the environment and the communities in which we live.
