Thought Provoking Sea Wonders at LCCHS

submitted by Marcello Sicoli

Strange creatures from the deep were created of thought-provoking materials in a 4-day “Art Inspires” workshop at LaSalle Community Comprehensive High School earlier this month.

Students from LCCHS’s Phoenix program collaborated with IB grade 8 classes in an exploration of the problem of ocean plastics as they created unique ocean chimeras using recycled packaging and natural clay. These hybrid sculptures, inspired by marine animals, highlighted the issues of plastic pollution and the Pacific Garbage Patch.

Students learned basic clay-building skills, including finishing techniques, and effectively used recycled materials to complete their pieces. They also discussed scientists’ predictions that by 2050, the ocean could contain more plastic than fish if we do not reduce our plastic consumption and waste.

“I really enjoyed the art project,” said student Connor D.-B., “because it made me think of the consequences of polluting our oceans.”

Their goal was to create artwork that would inspire community visitors to reflect on and take action against plastic pollution.

“Watching my students create art while using non biodegradable waste,” was an impactful experience, said Phoenix program teacher Andrew Coderre, as it “really helped them understand the horrible state our oceans are in.”

Thank you to our Phoenix teachers Ms. Oonagh O’neill and Andrew Coderre for taking the lead on this wonderful initiative and inviting Angela Marsh from Art Inspires to give a wonderful workshop. We also wish to thank all Secondary 2 IB teachers, Mrs. Cleveland, Mrs. Mcculloch, Ms. Racine, Mr. Badiane, Mr. Dort, and Mr. Sicoli, for having their students take part in this amazing learning experience with their students.
