Edgewater Principal Shirley Ann Kapitsky Retires After a Remarkable Career in Education

by Marilyn Santucci

After more than three decades of dedicated service, Shirley Ann Kapitsky is retiring from her role as Principal of Edgewater Elementary School, closing the chapter on a career that touched the lives of countless students, families, and colleagues.

She began her teaching journey in 1990 at John F. Kennedy Memorial School, and in 1999, she joined the Lester B. Pearson School Board. Throughout her career, Shirley supported students in a variety of roles, particularly as an English Resource teacher at Purcell Elementary, Springdale, and St. Patrick’s Elementary School. Her leadership journey took her to Macdonald High School as Vice-Principal, and eventually to Edgewater Elementary, where she has served as Principal for the past eight years.

Shirley’s compassionate and approachable nature has left a lasting impression on the Edgewater community. Known for creating a warm and welcoming environment, she often brought her dogs, Mindy and later Penny, to school. These four-legged companions quickly became beloved fixtures, offering comfort and support to students when they needed it most.

Outside of school, Shirley is supported by her loving husband Larry, and their children Cameron, Connor, and Sammy. As she steps into retirement, she leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and student-first leadership.

She will be greatly missed, but her impact will continue to be felt for years to come.

  1. I worked with surely for only her last year, transferring from another school. Knowing nothing of her as principal, I held my breath and crossed my fingers. My mid tear, I was joining others in feeling emotional about the pending change. What kept me smiling was thinking of her need and how deserving she was of retirement.

    Thank you Shirley! -Peter
