Spectacular Celebration for the 70th Black & Gold Variety Show

submitted by Chris Webb, Teacher
This year, the annual tradition celebrated 70 years of existence and took on a cleverly executed "Night of the Living Dead" theme. The two-night event was a spectacular showcase of the immense talent, creativity, and unwavering dedication that our students and staff bring to the stage year after year, pulled together in less than 24 hours due to the school closures!

The evening was brought to life by our charismatic Emcee’s, who seamlessly wove the spooky aesthetic throughout the night. Through a series of highly entertaining, thematic skits, ranging from comedic zombie transformations and eerie grave diggers to a hilarious “Dancing with the Dead” judging panel and a whimsical pop-star seance, the Emcee’s kept the audience laughing and engaged while expertly transitioning between acts. Their boundless energy and comedic timing established the perfect tone for a night full of surprises.

The performances themselves were a powerful testament to the wonderfully diverse artistic abilities within our school. The show opened with a show-stopping, fog-filled rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. From there, attendees were treated to an incredible array of acts. The showcase featured everything from hauntingly beautiful vocal performances, such as a moving rendition of The Cranberries’ “Zombie,” to high-energy K-Pop choreography and precise, rhythmic dance routines. Live instrumental music was also a cornerstone of the event, highlighted by dynamic, multi-instrument sets from the Jazz Band and Generations.

Other standout moments included a passionate musical theatre performance, a mesmerizing hula-hoop and yo-yo specialty act, including a Guiness World Record Holder, and a deeply touching father-daughter musical duet by The Addies, which brought a heartfelt contrast to the evening’s lively antics. The night culminated in a vibrant, all-cast disco medley that left the entire auditorium buzzing with joy.

Producing a show of this magnitude requires countless behind-the-scenes hours of rehearsal, technical coordination, and stage management. We extend our deepest gratitude to the parents, families, and community members who attended and supported our students. Your ongoing encouragement is the foundation that makes enduring traditions like Black & Gold possible. Thank you for helping us celebrate 70 years of artistic excellence; we look forward to many more years of unforgettable performances!
