Spotlight: Talya Halebi of St. Thomas High School

by Chloë Ranaldi

Talya Halebi kickstarted her teaching career last September at Saint-Thomas High School.

Even though she studied to be an elementary school teacher, she quickly fell in love with the high-school sector. While studying at McGill, her father, a high-school math teacher, suggested she try substituting where he worked to get some high-school experience.

“My passion for teaching began at an early age. From listening to my father’s stories to envisioning what my future classroom would look like, there was no doubt that I wanted to be a teacher,” she says.

When Saint Thomas recruited French teachers last summer, Talya jumped on the opportunity and was hired.

“I love the Saint-Thomas community. As a teacher, I love the connections I build with my students in my French immersion classes. No matter their age, the ultimate reward is knowing that I made a difference in their lives, and I know they always leave my classroom with new knowledge.”
