Top 10 Board-Wide Events

10

So maybe this isn’t really a “Top 10” since there are maybe a million events to choose from, but here is a list of 10 super fun events that you hear about at the Lester B. Pearson School Board. Feel free to add some of your favorite ones in the comments section below!

1) Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is back for its 10th edition. The board competition will be on March 29, and the ultimate competition will be on April 26, both at 7pm at the school board. During this event teams of high school students are required to answer trivia questions about a series of books that were assigned. The team that accumulates the most points wins the competition.

2) Math Olympics

It is with great pleasure that we announced that, after a 2-year hiatus, Math Olympics is officially back! Since the 2020 event was supposed to mark its 20th anniversary, we will be celebrating it this year. As such, we marked this special occasion by having a few extra surprises. We hosted this year’s event at PCHS on March 21st, 2023, and Lakeside Academy on March 22nd, 2023.

3) Qui Lira Vaincra

The Qui Lira Vaincra LBPSB finals will be taking place on April 26th. This reading competition consists of trivia questions asked of elementary student teams, based on French books assigned to them. This event consists of a semi final round between schools and a final round to determine the school board champions.

4) Opening Day

The excitement of “Opening Day” at our schools and centres cannot be beat. The eagerness of the staff to meet their new students, the excitement of the students to reconnect with their friends and learn about their new class… The smiles, the hugs, and the laughter are contagious.

5) Adult Learners’ Week

An event that typically takes place in April. During Adult Learners’ Week, the LBPSB hosts a banquet, or invests in creating a virtual celebration, that includes Adult Learners that have overcome obstacles, or exceeded expectations, during their academic journey. One student per center is selected to share their journey and their success.

6) Staff Appreciation

These events sometimes happen on different dates, and take different forms, across our system. There is no wrong way to show staff and volunteers how much you appreciate them.

7) Terry Fox Run

Many of our schools participate in a Terry Fox Run in September or October. During the 2022-2023 school year, the LBPSB raised a total of $182 284.42 for the Terry Fox Foundation. That’s pretty amazing.

8) Pearson Family Fun Run

An event that takes place during the morning of the first Sunday in May. The community is invited to come together to participate in a 2-km or 5-km run/walk at Centennial park in DDO. All we ask is that you donate to the Pearson Educational Foundation (PEF), a foundation that supports LBPSB school and students. For additional information about the event and to donate, click here: The 10-year anniversary of this event is happening this year on May 7! Hope to see you there!

9) Sports Tournaments Our physical education department does a great job of participating in boarwide tournaments organized exclusively for LBPSB schools. Some of these tournaments include ultimate frisbee, volleyball, cross country running, track & field, etc.

10) Concerts and Plays There are so many excellent concerts and plays that take place in our schools every year, it would be unjust to identify just one. Students get the opportunity to act, sing, play instruments, dance, and work backstage. What a great experience and fun memories!

11) … and so many more!
