by Helena Tsitouras
The Lester B. Pearson School Board’s International Department and Director General Cindy Finn were honoured to be present at this year’s West Island Multicultural Spring Festival Gala that took place in January. The annual Gala is a celebration of the Lunar New Year and showcases rich traditional Chinese and multicultural arts within the West Island. The event was hosted by the Montreal Confucius School and the West Island Chinese Community Centre of Montreal.
A warm invitation to the gala was extended to Lester B. Pearson’s international students and their families to join in the special event, celebrate the Lunar New Year, and welcome the year of the Dragon with community. Also in attendance were the mayors of numerous West Island boroughs including Pierrefonds, Pointe-Claire, and Kirkland. The gala not only served as a celebration of the Lunar New Year but also as an opportunity for cultural exchange and understanding among the diverse residents of the West Island.
The gala featured a mesmerizing traditional lion dance, setting the stage for an evening filled with cultural performances. The audience enjoyed enchanting Chinese music and dance routines, while K-pop dance and rhythmic gymnastics brought a contemporary twist to the festivities. The night continued with Black rhythms dancing in Spanish, folk music, Chinese calligraphy, acrobatics, and more!
Cindy Finn expressed her joy and appreciation for the event, stating, “It was wonderful to meet community leaders and celebrate the new year together. This evening was a delightful celebration of Chinese arts and culture, and it was a memorable experience that I will cherish. Witnessing the performances by youth from our community was tremendous. I thoroughly enjoyed the captivating dragon dances, the beautiful music, and the graceful dancing.”
The Lester B. Pearson School Board extends its gratitude to the Montreal Confucius School, the West Island Chinese Community Centre, and all those involved in making this event a resounding success. As we continue to cherish the richness of cultural diversity within our schools and community, let’s continue to inspire future celebrations that bring us together in unity and understanding.
