Westwood Senior High School Explores AI at Google Montreal

by Helena Tsitouras

Grade 10 students from Westwood Senior High School’s French class recently embarked on an engaging and educational journey to the Google Montreal office. Hosted by Digital Moment, the students attended a French presentation on Artificial Intelligence (AI) led by experts in the field, where they had the opportunity to learn from Google AI researchers.

The event, held on April 26, 2024, was a part of the grand unveiling of the Experience AI platform in French. This platform, launched by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Google DeepMind, is designed to educate teachers and students about AI’s impact. It provides resources such as lesson plans, worksheets, hands-on activities, and videos covering various AI applications and technologies, to inspire young learners in the field of AI.

During the day, the students participated in a range of activities, including keynote speeches, a panel discussion, and a question session. Assil Tabbara, a French teacher at Westwood Senior High School, emphasized the significance of the event: “AI is a very trendy topic and I have many students who are interested to learn more about it and possibly work in that field. I was also interested to learn more about it myself! I thought the event was very interesting and informative.” Assil also enjoyed the questions session, stating, “It allowed me to understand better and see AI from a more positive perspective.”

Fanny Bernier-Sutton, Westwood Sr Student, shared her thoughts on the event: “Personnellement, j’ai adoré la journée. Aller au Google Offices était une expérience que je n’aurais jamais attendue. C’était une expérience qui nous a donné la chance de recevoir des connaissances sur ce que le monde pourrait devenir.” (“Personally, I loved the day. Going to the Google Offices was an experience I never expected. It was an experience that gave us the chance to gain knowledge about what the world could become.”)

The Westwood Senior High School students left the Google office with a greater understanding of AI and its potential impact on various industries and everyday life. The event not only provided them with knowledge but also excitement about the future possibilities in the field of AI.
