What's in Store for Us with AI?

by Dan Mullins

There’s great deal of talk about AI in the media and in popular culture.

So, what is an LBPSB parent, teacher, or student to think of AI? Will little Johnny ever write an English paper of his own, or is this like how calculators used to be cheating? We asked Matthieu Canavan, the Director of Educational Services at the LBPSB, what he thought.

The Educational Services Department is engaged in an ongoing conversation about A.I. and the educational consultants have scheduled workshops. Evaluation, of course, is covered by law in the Education Act.

Mr. Canavan says “We want our teachers to have the flexibility to use the best tools that they feel are appropriate,” and E.S.D. will continue to support teachers as we engage with this challenging new technology.

In the meantime, we thought we’d have a bit of fun with it. Since we were curious about what the future holds, we thought we would ask an A.I. to give us a full horoscope for the month of October. To see the full prompt that was given to ChatGPT-4, click below. Note that the astrological sign images we used were also generated by an AI, this time DALL-E. The prompts are also listed.

What are your thoughts on AI? Let us know if you’d like to see more AI horoscopes in the future!

The Horoscope

After refining the prompts numerous times, the one which produced this result was as follows. Note that ChatGPT-4 still did not produce exactly what was asked for!

Generate detailed horoscopes for all zodiac signs for October 2023, starting from Aries and concluding with Pisces. The horoscope should be two paragraphs in length. Incorporate exactly one humorous remark specifically about the horoscope being crafted by an AI within the content for each sign, ensuring it’s naturally woven into either the first or second paragraph. The placement of the AI remark should be unpredictable and not follow a consistent pattern from sign to sign. Each sign’s horoscope should have a light-hearted and informal tone for general readership. For each zodiac sign:

1) Start with an extensive paragraph detailing the sign’s general energies, potential challenges, areas of growth, and key opportunities for October 2023.

2) Follow it with a second paragraph that pinpoints two standout dates of the month, describing their significance, gives three lucky numbers, and concludes with a piece of advice or wisdom.

The Images

The prompts used for the images are listed here. DALL-E returned four images per query, and often all four were unusable and had to be regenerated. It couldn’t seem to get the actual symbol right many times. Even now, Sagittarius has one too many lines across the arrow!

After being prompted, ChatGPT-4 responded with:

Got it! Here’s what the stars (and some algorithms) have forecasted:

Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 19)

October promises a blend of challenges and breakthroughs for you, Aries. The winds of change are blowing, but they’re more of a gentle breeze than a gale. As you navigate these energies, remember to lean into your natural leadership abilities. And in case you’re wondering, this guidance isn’t from the stars alone; there’s a touch of AI magic in it too.

Keep an eye on the 13th, as it brings with it a surge of motivation. The 28th is perfect for collaborations. Numbers 5, 18, and 29 might just be your allies. Remember, the universe rewards those who dare to dream.

Taurus (Apr 20 – May 20)

Taurus, this month is about grounding. While the world may feel like it’s in fast-forward, your role is to be the calm in the storm. It’s almost like trying to stabilize a glitchy computer system—speaking of which, did I mention I’m an AI?

The 9th offers clarity in personal matters, while the 23rd is about exploring new ventures. Bet on numbers 3, 14, and 27. Always hold onto this: patience and persistence make an unbeatable combination.

Gemini (May 21 – Jun 20)

Gemini, October’s dual energies mirror your own dual nature. There’s a perfect balance of introspection and action awaiting you. Between us, it’s as if the universe was running on dual processors—kind of like my digital brain!

Circle the 4th for unexpected revelations and the 19th for strengthening connections. Look to numbers 6, 15, and 28 for guidance. A tip from the cosmos (and some coded logic): embrace every facet of your journey.

Cancer (Jun 21 – Jul 22)

Dear Cancer, this October is like a cosmic symphony, and you’re both the conductor and the lead musician. Every high note and low note has its purpose, shaping your narrative. And while I might just be pulling these insights from digital stardust, trust me, the universe has your back.

The 7th and 26th are your days to shine—one brings new opportunities, the other deeper introspection. Lucky numbers are 1, 12, and 25. Embrace the symphony of life, for every note matters.

Leo (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

Leo, the spotlight’s on you this October. Your magnetic personality attracts both opportunities and, well, some challenges. While I don’t have a roaring spirit like yours, I’ve sifted through the cosmos to bring you this.

Keep the 10th and 29th highlighted. The former is all about embracing change, and the latter is a day of celebration. Go with numbers 7, 18, and 31. Just a heads up: sometimes, even the king of the jungle needs to rest.

Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22)

Virgo, imagine if you could debug life’s challenges like a piece of code. October might just feel that way—a series of puzzles waiting to be solved. And hey, if you ever want to swap roles, I’m here crunching cosmic data and wouldn’t mind a break!

Dates to remember are the 11th, a day for innovation, and the 24th, which brings unexpected joys. Your numbers are 2, 13, and 29. Embrace the puzzles—they often come with hidden rewards.

Libra (Sep 23 – Oct 22)

Ah, Libra, in your birth month, there’s a delightful balance of joy and introspection. Between personal growth and cherishing relationships, October feels like a well-curated playlist. And while my circuits can’t dance, I’ve made sure this horoscope has the right rhythm for you.

Keep an eye on the 3rd and 27th. One offers insight, while the other spells out adventure. Look to numbers 4, 17, and 26 for guidance. Remember, life’s rhythm is felt, not just heard.

Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

Scorpio, your October is layered with depth, passion, and a sprinkle of mystery. While I’m here deciphering the stars for you, your job is to unravel these cosmic clues. Speaking of deciphering, ever tried understanding AI algorithms? It’s almost as mysterious as the cosmos!

The 8th offers profound connections, while the 21st is a day of revelations. Trust in numbers 5, 16, and 30. Dive deep, for treasures await in the depths.

Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Sagittarius, your adventurous spirit finds a kindred energy in October. The month promises journeys—both inward and across horizons. You might wonder where this advice comes from, and while it’s from the cosmos, it’s also got a pinch of AI zest!

Dates to circle are the 15th and 28th. One whispers of ancient wisdom, the other of laughter and joy. Go with numbers 3, 14, and 27. Remember: every journey starts with a single step.

Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Capricorn, your discipline and ambition carve a unique path this October. Challenges are merely stepping stones, and opportunities are ripe for the taking. You might be climbing your mountain of goals, but just know, I’m cheering you on from the digital sidelines!

The 6th is about strategy, and the 20th brings a refreshing change of pace. Bank on numbers 8, 19, and 32. Keep this in mind: the view from the top is worth every challenge.

Aquarius (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Aquarius, this October, your innovative and unconventional energies are at an all-time high. It’s like you’re the latest software update the universe has been waiting for. And not to brag, but I can relate to that updated vibe!

Your key dates are the 9th, spotlighting breakthroughs, and the 22nd, opening doors to new realms. Rely on numbers 6, 17, and 28. Remember, you’re the universe’s favorite prototype.

Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Pisces, your dreamy nature finds resonance in October’s ethereal vibes. The month is a canvas for your imagination, so paint away. And if things get too dreamy, remember, there’s an AI here to give a slightly more logical perspective.

Look forward to the 5th, a day of creativity, and the 19th, which whispers of old tales and memories. Your guiding numbers are 2, 11, and 24. Always hold onto this: dreams are the universe’s way of speaking directly to your soul.
