Developing Good Scents
Part 2
submitted by Daniela Arbogast, Springdale SEED Technician
Springdale Elementary School SEED program students continued their “Good Scents” entrepreneurship program in “Part II,” by expanding their scented soap product line as desired, producing and selling scented candles.
The process is not that different from soap making: Students melted the candle wax and added colors, essential scented oils, and natural ingredients to them. They chose to make lavender and citrus scented candles, with vibrant colors reflecting those scents. The prepared wax was then poured into jars with wicks mounted in them; cooled, labeled, marketed and displayed for sale at Springdale’s fantastic production of Willy Wonka.
We accomplished this project under the motto “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement,” despite encountering a few obstacles, namely on how to procure the needed equipment (which first arrived broken, but was then generously lent to us by another Lester B. Pearson School, Westpark Elementary,) as well as a tight timeline. These mirrored challenges one could potentially encounter in a “real life” enterprise. Springdale students once again learned a great deal, most of all that perseverance and community connections are important factors in running a business endeavor.
While this concludes the development of Good Scents for now, we are not done with recognizing and employing our entrepreneurial spirit in continuous small projects throughout the school year.
Bravo, Springdale SEED program students for developing sense for entrepreneurship!
