Developing Good Scents
Part 1

submitted by Daniela Arbogast, Springdale SEED Technician

Children of the SEED program at Springdale Elementary School of the Lester B. Pearson School Board started on an entrepreneurial endeavor, and developed some good scents!

On a pedagogical day a group of about 18 elementary school age students learned about different aspects of entrepreneurship; and were very enthusiastic to take on a project. It had to be something to help the community. The project they took on – with the help of their educators – was to make soap. Not only can it be donated into the Christmas baskets the school gives out to those in need every year, it can also be sold to earn proceeds toward other community projects.

The children melted the soap base and added different scents, colors and natural ingredients to make honey & oat soap and lavender soap. They poured the liquid soap into molds, removed the set soap bars from the molds, wrapped and labeled them, designed advertisement posters, did market research to determine pricing, and sold the soaps at the school’s open house in January.

From the science behind solids and liquids, to the attributes of water- vs. oil based additives, to the sensory aspects of a product like soap (feel, smell etc.), to knowledge about hygiene, advertisement and design, packaging and pricing, to finally presentation and sale, the children learned many aspects of what entrepreneurship entails, while being engaged in the project in many different ways; from the youngest to the oldest.

Christopher, 7 yrs. old, when mixing the water-based colors into the soap base, where they were repelled by the scented essential oil: “Oh, I like the colors now, they look like a galaxy.”

Sarvin, 9 yrs. old, when explained that lavender has soothing qualities: “This smells so good, I really like it. It will be a nice present for my mom.”

The enthusiasm was palpable in one 4th grader, when she asked, if she could design her own labels on the computer, as well as create posters for advertisement. She was so motivated, that she asked her mother to bring her to help sell the soaps at the Springdale open house, even though this meant showing up with wet hair after her swimming lessons.

All the children were involved in the production, many helped wrap and label, and then a few drove the project forward and wanted to be involved in all the remaining steps. We had sixteen soap producers and designers, seven wrappers and labelers, three graphic designers and three salespeople.

Our proceeds will go towards expanding our product line, which the children asked for while still selling. They would like to learn next how to make scented candles, stay tuned! We are developing good sense to make good scents!
